Susan is relatively new to scratchboard, but she has had a lifelong love affair with black & white. As she has started adding color to her scratchboard, she is combining both of her top mediums. She is most well known for her watercolor paintings and is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society, the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and is a Saguaro Fellow of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. She earned a B.A. from Brigham Young University in Painting & Drawing in 2004, taking extra studies in illustration, and art education. She has since continued to push herself in learning and mastering other media, including scratchboard. In 2019 she earned her Nature Illustration Certificate from the Art Institute at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum (in Tucson) where she has been full time faculty since 2012. She also teaches weekly at Green Valley Recreation (south of Tucson since 2010.) Her classes include a wide range of media and subject matter: Drawing, Portraiture, Pen & Ink, Watercolor, Color Mixing, Composition & Design, Collage, Creative Journaling, Acrylics and of course Scratchboard. She also presents other workshops and classes when invited.
