Susan is relatively new to scratchboard, but is enjoying the challenge of working backwards: removing black to reveal white, then adding color using her watercolor skills. Susan was recently recognized as a Signature Member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists. Her scratchboard “Three Queens” was awarded at the 2023 ISSA Exhibit at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona, and two of her pieces are currently hanging in the 2026 ISSA Exhibit at Tucson’s ASDM Ironwood Gallery.

Susan was born in small-town central Utah, and raised her family in her home state until she moved to the Tucson area in 2008. She earned a bachelor’s in studio art from Brigham Young University and the Nature Illustration Certificate from the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum Art Institute. She has been faculty at the ASDM Art Institute since 2012 and taught at Green Valley Recreation since 2010. She teaches workshops throughout Arizona and Utah, and is often a guest teacher for elementary school groups and senior recreation centers.

Susan is a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society and the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, and is a Saguaro Fellow of the Southern Arizona Watercolor Guild. Her watercolors have won numerous awards and hang in many galleries, museums and private collections across the western U.S.
