The American kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America, measuring at 9 – 12 inches long, or about the size of a mourning dove. They are unique in their ability to hover in the air while they search for small prey, which include small mammals, insects, lizards and small birds. The male pictured here has colorful blue wings and two black stripes on the face.
