The Harris’s hawk is unusual in the avian world for being a hawk that lives and hunts cooperatively in groups or family units of up to seven individuals. In Arizona, they build nests in large trees or even Saguaro cactus, often refurbishing and reusing an old nest for several years. The range of the Harris’s hawk is limited to a very small area of the southwestern United States but can be found as far south as Chile and Argentina. The Harris’s hawk stands 18 – 24 inches tall and has a wingspan of up to 47 inches.
