The Northern Harrier hawk is a winter visitor in Arizona. It is known for its slow and graceful glide or “dance” over fields and grasslands, looking and listening for prey. The males are gray in color, nicknamed the gray ghost, while the females, like the one pictured here, are brown. Both males and females have yellow eyes and a white patch at the base of the tail. Larger than the males, the females have a wingspan of up to 48 inches.
