Brit Hansen is a fourth generation artist living in the Painted Desert region of Arizona with her husband and two children. She studied at Arizona State University where she earned her BFA in 2010 and after worked as a photographer for eight years traveling the world. She started block printing while on bedrest with her first child and hung up her camera for good. She still makes block prints occasionally but her passion lies with carving. This led her to experiment with carving various mediums and discovering she could layer acrylic paint until it was thick enough to carve. She now layers paint onto wooden panels in layers of color and carves them by hand to reveal detailed designs.

Carving paint enables Brit to create artworks full of color and texture inspired by the desert and the culture of the West. Because of her photography background, she carves her subjects as if she is taking their portrait. She focuses on the textures and small details of each subject to bring the viewer in to take a closer look. The depth of the texture gives each piece another level of detail that changes as the light shifts across the carving.
